Our Story
In the early 1990s, Kerala witnessed a growing number of wandering individuals struggling with untreated mental illness, while professional mental health services remained limited. Deeply moved by their suffering, Mr. Johney P.A., a compassionate social worker with an unwavering commitment to humanitarian service, took it upon himself to make a difference.
With the support of local volunteers and well-wishers, he founded Jyothinivas Charitable Society in Wayanad District to provide care, shelter, and rehabilitation for the homeless and mentally ill. What began as a humble initiative rooted in empathy and community spirit has grown into a trusted institution known for its commitment to mental health and social welfare.
Together with his wife, Mrs. Gracy Johney, Mr. Johney has built not just a care facility, but a loving home, one where every resident is treated as family. Their compassion and personal involvement have created the warm, family like atmosphere that defines Jyothinivas today.

Objectives
About
Jyothinivas Charitable Society is a voluntary, non-profit organization dedicated to the care, protection, and rehabilitation of individuals affected by mental illness and other disabilities. The Society holds all legally required registrations under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860, the Board of Control for Orphanages and Other Charitable Institutions (Government of Kerala), the Right of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act, and the National Trust Act, ensuring transparency, accountability, and trust in all our activities.

Educational Initiative – Jyothis English Academy
As part of our commitment to community development, Jyothinivas Charitable Society also runs Jyothis English Academy, a nursery school that provides quality early education to 32 young students. The academy fosters a joyful, inclusive, and nurturing learning environment that emphasizes moral values, creativity, and holistic development.
Through this initiative, we aim to lay a strong educational foundation for the next generation while promoting compassion and social responsibility from a young age.
Rehabilitation Approach
At Jyothinivas, we believe mental illness requires compassionate, consistent, and comprehensive care. Once residents receive the necessary medical treatment, our multidisciplinary approach focuses on counseling, therapy, and skill-building to support long-term rehabilitation.
Our volunteers identify destitute individuals abandoned on the streets and bring them to safety, where they receive medical treatment, social support, and emotional guidance. Those who recover are either reunited with their families or assisted in finding suitable employment according to their skills and interests — helping them regain dignity, purpose, and self-reliance.
Our Services
Our Psycho-Social Rehabilitation Care Home currently accommodates 75 residents, supported by a team of 17 dedicated staff members. We provide a nurturing, home-like environment that meets every essential need — including food, clothing, shelter, and medical care — while also supporting emotional, social, and spiritual well-being through:
-
Individual and group counseling
-
Occupational and vocational training
-
Recreational and therapeutic activities
-
Family reintegration programs
Each resident receives personalized care designed to promote recovery, restore confidence, and foster independence.

Testimonials
Paul
"There was a time when my son’s aggressive behavior due to schizophrenia made everyday life a struggle. After treatment at Kuthiravattam, he was admitted to Jyothinivas for psychiatric rehabilitation. The change we witnessed was nothing short of a miracle. He became more composed, responsible, and independent. Through vocational training, he developed a skill in umbrella-making, and now he’s earning on his own. I never thought I’d see him smile again, but today, he’s living with dignity and purpose. Thank you, Jyothinivas, for bringing our son back to us."
Maria
"I have witnessed the remarkable growth of Jyothinivas Psychiatric Rehabilitation Centre over the past 35 years. I still remember the early days when Brother Johney started the centre with just a few inmates, most of them were mentally ill and destitute individuals rescued from the streets. Brother Johney, along with his wife and children, lived among them, providing not just treatment, food, and shelter, but also unconditional love and care.
It fills my heart with joy to see how far Jyothinivas has come today. The number of residents has grown, but what remains unchanged is the centre’s spirit of compassion and service. It has never been about business it has always been about extending a helping hand to those in need, especially the people of Wayanad who struggle with mental health challenges.
The growth of this institution has also been made possible by the generous support of the local community, whose contributions help provide food, medicine, and other essentials for the residents. I feel truly blessed to have been a part of this journey and to have had the opportunity to serve the inmates of Jyothinivas in my own small way."
A Proud Parent
"I am truly happy that my child began her early education at Jyothis English Academy. In a society where many people still fear or misunderstand those with severe mental illness, Johney Sir has created a beautiful opportunity to break that stigma by establishing a nursery school alongside the psychiatric rehabilitation centre.
At Jyothis English Academy, children not only learn their lessons but also grow in empathy and understanding. They spend time interacting and playing with the residents of Jyothinivas, and these moments teach them kindness, acceptance, and respect for all people. I sincerely believe that such experiences will help my child grow into a more compassionate and humane individual.
I am deeply grateful to Johney Sir and the entire team for their vision, love, and dedication in shaping both young minds and compassionate hearts."
